SALT LAKE CITY — Just before 5 a.m. on Saturday, a car was reported to have been traveling the wrong direction on northbound Interstate 15 at 600 South.
Minutes later, there were reports that the car, a white hatchback, collided with a blue FJ Cruiser in a head-on collision near 900 South, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
Drivers of both cars died as a result of the collision. The driver of the FJ Cruiser was not wearing a seatbelt, but the driver of the white hatchback was. There were no passengers in either car.
UHP said it is investigating impairment as a cause of the accident.
Names of the two people who died were not immediately released, as family was still being notified.
Troopers asked people to use alternate routes if possible on Saturday morning, but said at about 11:30 a.m. that all lanes in the area are open.
Wrong-way crashes have been increasing over the last few years in Utah, Saturday's crash is at least the fourth fatal wrong-way crash this year in Utah.
