Utah reports 13 new COVID deaths, 1,935 new cases as numbers decline

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah health officials reported 13 additional COVID-19 deaths on Thursday, along with 1,935 new cases.

The rolling, seven-day average for new positive tests is now 1,956 per day — less than 2,000 for the first time since the omicron surge took hold in Utah. The seven-day average for positive tests is now 33.4%, also continuing a gradual decline.

Currently, 650 people are hospitalized throughout the state with COVID-19, with 157 of those patients in intensive care, according to the Utah Department of Health. Intensive care units in Utah are at about 85% capacity, as of Thursday, and overall hospital beds are about 60% full. And 88% of referral hospital beds are full.

School children account for 319 of Thursday's new cases. Of those, 155 were children between ages 5 and 10, 67 were ages 11-13, and 97 were ages 14-17.

Utah officials have reported 4,250 COVID-19 deaths in Utah since the beginning of the pandemic, which is about 0.47% of all reported COVID-19 cases.

Of the overall deaths, 1,493 were Salt Lake County residents, 727 were Utah County residents, 569 were residents of southwest Utah, 396 were residents of the Weber-Morgan health district, 355 were Davis County residents, 211 were residents in the Bear River health district, 146 were in the Central Utah health district and the other health districts, combined, had fewer than 100 deaths caused by COVID-19.

The latest deaths include:

  • A Davis County woman between the ages of 65 and 84, who was hospitalized when she died.
  • A Davis County man, 65-84, hospitalized.
  • A Garfield County woman, 65-84, hospitalized.
  • Two Salt Lake County men, 65-84, both hospitalized.
  • A Sevier County woman, 65-84, hospitalized.
  • A Utah County man, 45-64, hospitalized.
  • A Utah County man, 65-84, not hospitalized.
  • A Utah County man, 65-84, hospitalized.
  • A Utah County woman, 65-84, hospitalized.
  • Three Utah County men, over 85, all hospitalized.
