SALT LAKE CITY — Utah health officials reported 1,816 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday as well as four additionals deaths.

The rolling, seven-day average for new cases is 1,300 per day, and the average positive rate is 11.3%, the Utah Department of Health said.

School-aged children accounted for 186 of those new cases — 62 cases were ages 5-10, 44 cases were 11-13, and 80 cases were 14-17.

Since Monday's report, 7,533 people have been tested for the coronavirus, according to health officials.

Health care workers administered 9,983 vaccine doses since the previous day, bringing total doses given in Utah to 4,514,838.

On Tuesday, 438 patients were hospitalized with COVID-19 across Utah — a decrease of six compared to a week ago.

Of the cases reported Tuesday, 864 — or 47.6% — are "breakthrough" cases among people who had been fully vaccinated more than two weeks before testing positive for the disease. No additional breakthrough deaths were reported. There have now been 60,349 breakthrough cases and 347 breakthrough deaths confirmed in Utah since vaccines became available in December 2020.

Data still shows people who have not been vaccinated remain more at risk from the coronavirus. In the last 28 days, unvaccinated residents have experienced an 18.5 times greater risk of dying from COVID-19, 10 times greater risk of hospitalization due to COVID-19, and 3.4 times greater risk of testing positive for COVID-19 than vaccinated people, state health officials said Tuesday.

Since Feb. 1, unvaccinated residents have experienced 6.9 times greater risk of dying from COVID-19, 5.6 times greater risk of being hospitalized due to COVID-19, and 2.5 times greater risk of testing positive for COVID-19 than vaccinated people, according to the data.

The latest deaths include:

  • A Salt Lake County man between the ages of 65 and 84, who was not hospitalized.
  • A Salt Lake County man, 65-84, hospitalized.
  • A Salt Lake County woman, 65-84, hospitalized.
  • A Washington County woman, 65-84, hospitalized.
