SALT LAKE CITY — The popular Tour of Utah road cycling series has been canceled for 2022.
In a press release posted on the event website, event organizer Medalist Sports said it would "no longer pursue planning efforts" for next year's event and has requested its removal from the international cycling calendar.
"Ongoing sponsor and host community discussions have been positive; however, not strong enough to support a viable effort to meet our collective expectations," Medalist Sports owner Chris Aronhalt said. "While disappointed, Medalist Sports is grateful for the opportunity and cherishes the Tour of Utah's legacy."
This is the third year in a row that the annual multiday road cycling race has been canceled, with the events of 2020 and 2021 being called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Tour of Utah began in 2004, and became part of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) in 2011, which brought international competitors. The last time the TOU was held was in 2019, where it was named as "one of the premier events for professional cycling teams in North America."
