MILLCREEK — Utah state Rep. Mike Winder announced Tuesday he will not seek reelection next year, as he accepted a new position as Millcreek's city manager.

Winder, R-West Valley City, has served in the House since 2017.

"I have enjoyed my 14 years in elected office, and I will dearly miss the great people I serve within the Legislature," Winder said in a statement. "However, I love local government and as Utah's newest city, there are tremendous opportunities at Millcreek. I'm excited to continue my work with the amazing team and community here."

Millcreek officials said the City Council appointed Winder on Monday night. The previous city manager, John Geilmann, retired in 2020, and Mayor Jeff Silvestrini has acted as city manager during the transition, according to the statement.

Winder has been serving as assistant city manager in Millcreek since January, and as the city's economic development director since early 2018.

"Since his appointment as assistant city manager, Mike has gained the confidence of all of our city department heads and the members of the city council," Mayor Jeff Silvestrini said. "He has and will continue to serve our business community as economic development director."

Winder will begin working as city manager on March 7, following the 2022 general session of the Utah Legislature.
