SALT LAKE CITY — A construction worker died Wednesday during an industrial accident at the Salt Lake City International Airport, police said.

About 8:39 a.m., emergency personnel were dispatched to the report of the worker being injured at the airport. When they arrived, they confirmed the person had died on scene, Salt Lake police said in a statement.

The Salt Lake City Department of Airports said the accident occurred as part of the ongoing airport reconstruction program. Airport officials said the death happened in an "isolated" area of the airport campus and the site was secured.

The worker was an employee of SoNev Construction, according to a statement from Managing Member Keith Gilbert. The death occurred while crews were performing maintenance on some construction equipment at the airport, he said.

"SoNev Construction is deeply saddened by the loss of one of its valued employees," Gilbert said. "Our hearts go out to the employee's family and to the other employees on site who witnessed this tragedy."

The company is not releasing the employee's name, Gilbert added.

Salt Lake police, the Utah Medical Examiner's Office and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the death. SoNev Construction managers and airport personnel also are assisting with the investigation, according to Gilbert.
