HERRIMAN — A man accused of losing his temper with the family dog was arrested Wednesday after police say he killed the animal.

The 30-year-old man was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated cruelty to animals.

Herriman police were originally called on a report of "an animal being killed." Officers found the owners of the puppy at a local animal hospital. There, they learned that a man "had 'lost his temper' with (the) dog and had killed it," according to a police affidavit.

The man told police the dog was not obeying him and he kicked the animal in the abdomen, the affidavit states.

"The dog then bit (the man) on the hand. (He) told me (he) then back-handed the dog, got on top of it and struck the dog in the head at least three times, causing its death," the arresting officer wrote in the report.

Details such as the age of the dog — which police described as a puppy — as well as the breed of the animal, were not immediately available.
