CENTRAL VALLEY, Sevier County — An elderly couple were critically injured when police say their grandson attacked them both with a knife before being shot by his grandfather.
The attacks occurred late Thursday when a woman "in obvious panic" called 911 to report that her husband was being stabbed by their grandson, who then began attacking his grandmother, Sevier County Sheriff Nathan Curtis said in a statement.
"As she was being attacked, the first stabbing victim was able to get a handgun and shoot the attacking grandson multiple times. This gave the stabbing victims time to leave the residence, get in their vehicle, and drive to the neighbor's house," Curtis said.
When deputies arrived, the couple were bleeding from multiple stab wounds and were being treated by neighbors until paramedics arrived.
Deputies also went to the couple's home, where the grandson has also been living with them for several years, and arrested Wade Evans, 28. He was "covered in blood" and still had a knife in his hand when he approached the deputies, the sheriff said. He dropped the knife after he was ordered to do so and deputies took him into custody.
Margo Evans, 75, and Charles Evans, 78, suffered "multiple stab and defensive wounds" that needed "advanced medical care" and were hospitalized in critical but stable condition, according to Curtis. Wade Evans was also hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
The sheriff's office did not say what precipitated the attack.
