MIDVALE — A man shot in the parking lot of a Motel 6 over the weekend has died.

Unified police confirmed Monday morning the victim had passed away. His name was not released pending notification of family members.

Lorenzo Deanleo Parker, 26, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Sunday, prior to the victim dying, for investigation of felony discharge of a gun, aggravated assault and escape.

The incident happed at 7263 Catalpa St. in Midvale, about 3:30 a.m. Sunday. Police were called on a report of a shooting and found an injured 30-year-old man.

"The victim is currently in surgery … and not expected to survive," officers wrote in Parker's police booking affidavit.

A witness told police that both men had been drinking and arguing throughout the night.

"At some point, the victim grabbed two metal stakes from a grassy area on the northwest lawn of the Motel 6 and began to go after Parker with them," the affidavit states.

Initially, Parker pointed the gun at the man and pulled the trigger, but the gun did not fire, according to police. The second time he pointed the gun, however, it went off, the affidavit says.

"The victim began screaming and running away until he collapsed in the west portion of the parking lot," police wrote in the report.

Another witness told police that "Parker pulled out a handgun and started waving it around" after arguing with the victim and that "the victim grabbed something to defend himself."

Detectives determined that Parker had been following the victim around the motel property and antagonizing him, according to the affidavit, and surveillance video showed the victim was "backing away" when Parker pulled the trigger.

Parker is originally from Alabama and has only been in Utah for a month, police say.
