HEBER CITY — Three women were killed in a fiery crash involving three vehicles Monday that forced officials to shut down southbound U.S. 189 for four hours.

The crash occurred about 5:20 p.m. after a northbound Jeep Wrangler slowed down suddenly and was hit by a red Ford F350 pickup truck traveling behind it, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. The Jeep caught on fire after the initial impact.

A third vehicle was involved after the initial crash and T-boned the Jeep. The third vehicle, a Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV, also caught on fire after colliding with the Jeep, troopers said.

The woman driving the Jeep, who was the only occupant of the car, died in the crash. Both occupants of the Trailblazer also died, UHP troopers said.

The woman driving the Jeep was identified Saturday as Amy Nelson of Heber City. The occupants of the Trailblazer were identified as Payton Caldwell and Emma Call, both 18-year-old recent graduates from Wasatch High School who were preparing for college, according to the Wasatch County Sheriff's Office.

The male driver of the F350 had minor injuries and was treated at the scene. UHP said the Jeep also clipped a southbound Ford Escape and caused minor damage to the car, but the two occupants of that car weren't injured.

Troopers said they were not sure why the Jeep caught on fire after the initial impact and were investigating the cause. A nearby field also caught fire.
