WEST VALLEY CITY — A woman died after she went off the road and hit a tree in West Valley City on Friday morning, police said.

The crash happened about 4:17 a.m. on 3500 South near 5400 West, West Valley Police Sgt. John Pittman said.

The woman, who is between 30 and 40 years old, was driving west on 3500 South when she went off the road and hit a large tree, Pittman said. She was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected from the car, according to police. She likely died instantly or very quickly after the impact, Pittman added.

He did not identify the woman. It's not clear why she went off the road, and authorities don't know if impairment was a possible factor in the crash, Pittman said.

As of 9 a.m., all westbound lanes of 3500 South are closed between 5400 West and 5600 West, according to West Valley City police. Traffic is being diverted in the area, but eastbound lanes are open, police said.
