EUREKA, Juab County — A man driving a van on U.S. 6 hit a large trailer on Thursday, sending debris through the windshield that killed the driver of the van, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
Clifford Sweet, 40, of Layton, was driving a Ram ProMaster Cargo Van on U.S. 6 near Eureka just after 1 p.m. when he crossed the center line and struck the rear corner of a large trailer being hauled by a Ford truck, the UHP stated.
"This caused extensive damage to the trailer and a large portion of the trailer's structure to come apart," according to a prepared statement from the highway patrol.
Portions of the trailer went through the van's windshield, causing fatal injuries to Sweet, according to the UHP.
The west lanes of U.S. 6 were closed for five hours as troopers investigated the crash. What caused the van to cross the center line was under investigation Friday.
