SALT LAKE CITY – Gov. Spencer Cox has ordered both the American and the Utah state flags to be lowered to half-staff on Monday to honor a U.S. Capitol Police officer who was killed during Wednesday's storming of the Capitol in Washington, D.C.
"Officer Brian D. Sicknick gave his life trying to protect one of this nation's most revered democratic institutions," a statement from Cox reads. "We honor his life of dedicated public service as part of U.S. Capitol Police and as a staff sergeant for the New Jersey National Guard."
Sicknick was injured while "physically engaging with protesters," according to a police statement, and died from his injuries on Thursday evening. He was one of five people who died during the riot on Wednesday, another was a woman who was shot by police inside the Capitol building and three more died from "medical emergencies."
The FBI and the Washington police department's homicide unit are investigating Sicknick's death and say it is a "top priority" to identify anyone responsible, according to Reuters.
Flags will be flown at half-staff at all state facilities and public grounds from sunrise to sunset Monday; individuals, businesses, schools and others are encouraged to do the same as a sign of respect, according to the statement.
