CASTLE DALE— Police say a Castle Dale man was on his way to kill his stepfather before he was stopped by the Emery County Sheriff's Office.
Bailey Wyatt Bishop, 21, was charged Wednesday in 7th District Court with attempted murder, a first-degree felony; obstructing justice, a second-degree felony; failing to respond to an officer's signal to stop, and two counts of assault by a prisoner, third-degree felonies; spitting at an officer, a class A misdemeanor; drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia, both class B misdemeanors.
On Saturday, emergency dispatchers received a call that Bishop was on his way from Salina to kill his stepfather and was armed with a handgun, according to a police affidavit. His car was spotted on state Route 10 by Emery County Sheriff Greg Funk who attempted to pull Bishop over.
Bishop refused to stop and continued driving at 80 mph as other deputies prepared to deploy tire spikes, the affidavit states,
"I deployed my spikes as the vehicle neared, Bailey maneuvered around them," a deputy wrote in the affidavit. The deputy then joined in the chase.
Bishop continued through the town of Ferron traveling 60 mph in a 35 mph zone, according to the affidavit. Deputies again deployed tire spikes outside of Ferron, which Bishop attempted to drive around and nearly hit another vehicle in the process, the affidavit states.
As the speeds again reached 80 mph, the sheriff drove in front of Bishop in an attempt to slow him down. It was about that time that Bishop threw his gun out the window, the affidavit states.
Deputies were able to box Bishop in and get him to pull over.
"Bailey placed his hands out the driver side window. I took hold of Bailey's hands as Sheriff Funk opened his door. Bailey was escorted to the ground where he was placed in handcuffs." according to the affidavit. "While transporting Bailey to the jail he admitted without being asked that he was on his way to his stepdad's house to shoot and kill him."
Bishop then claimed he "had a hit on everyone he went to high school with" and that he had ties to Mexican cartel and a gang in Chicago, according to the affidavit.
"He said if they didn't hear from him they would be on the way to start killing people and it would be a bloodbath. Bailey also said he had already killed someone and it would be easy to kill again," the affidavit states.
After arriving at the jail, Bishop showed signs of being suicidal and deputies decided he needed to be put into clothing that he couldn't rip and use to hurt himself. It was also determined he needed to be placed in a restraint chair, according to the affidavit.
However, as the sheriff and deputies attempted to place him in the chair, Bishop kicked the sheriff, and bit and spit on a deputy, the affidavit states.
