SOUTH SALT LAKE — Police arrested a man over the weekend who they say used a large rock to kill a woman in South Salt Lake last week.
Jovanie Alejandro Silva, 22, was arrested Saturday for investigation of murder in connection with the death of Kaitlyn Barron, 23, whose naked body was found in a rear parking lot at 2550 S. 300 West.
“The female was severely beaten and an obvious victim to a homicide and potential victim of rape,” a police affidavit states.
Detectives found a nearby surveillance camera that recorded Silva and Barron walking along 300 West on Sept. 27 just before 4:30 a.m.
“The two walk out of view but can still be heard. On the audio you hear (Barron) scream, and says either, ‘Please don’t hurt me’ or ‘Please don’t rape me,’ then you can hear an impact/popping followed by screaming,” the affidavit states.

Police have released the name of a woman who was found dead earlier this week in South Salt Lake.Based on the sounds that were recorded and evidence found at the scene, police believe Silva used a “large stone” to repeatedly strike Barron “over and over,” according to the affidavit.
About 30 minutes after Silva walked out of the camera’s view, he was seen walking away from the area, police say.
Using other surveillance cameras, police were able to track Silva to the homeless shelter at 3380 S. 1000 West. Officers served a search warrant and collected some of Silva’s clothing at the shelter. He was arrested on Saturday.
