SALT LAKE CITY — Criminal charges were filed Wednesday against a Vernal man accused of stabbing his housemate over rent money.

Cody James Aaron Evans, 27, is charged in 8th District Court with aggravated assault, a second-degree felony, and assault, a class B misdemeanor.

On Friday, Evans “became angry with the victim over rent money,” and he and at least two others hit and punched the victim while he was on the floor, according to charging documents.

“After the initial assault, the victim began to pack his things to leave the apartment. While the victim was packing, (Evans) stabbed the victim in the back,” the charges state.

The victim’s injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.

Later that same night as police were investigating the stabbing, they learned that Evans, who was then “extremely intoxicated,” had threatened to stab a neighbor while in the neighbor’s yard, according to a police affidavit.

“Cody stated he was trying to get home and had come to this residence on his way home and that these people were the gatekeepers. While speaking to Cody he was making the statement, ‘I’m just trying to get by and they are the gatekeepers,’” the affidavit states.
