LOGAN — A man convicted of sexually extorting a Logan teenager two years ago now faces charges of attempting to stab a security guard.

Michael Brent Powell, 23, was charged Thursday in 1st District Court with aggravated assault, a third-degree felony, and assault on a health care worker, a class A misdemeanor.

On Sept. 3, Powell was taken to Logan Regional Hospital to be treated for an overdose, according to a police affidavit.

“Michael was initially unconscious, but eventually woke up. I was told Michael had been difficult the entire time he was in the ER room. He would not allow the nurses to conduct their evaluations and met them with resistance,” the affidavit states. “At one point, Michael began telling one of the nurses he was going to stab her. Michael then produced a knife in his right hand and lunged at the security guard with the knife in hand.”

Hospital staff members were able to grab Powell’s arm and restrain him. Even after taking the knife away, Powell “was still making threats to stab the nurse he initially threatened,” according to the affidavit.

In 2017, Powell was accused of extorting a 17-year-old girl he had previously had a relationship with into sending him nude pictures and videos or risk having the ones he already had of her being sent to her friends and family.

He was convicted of sexual extortion and sexual exploitation of a minor, both second-degree felonies, and sentenced in 2018 to a year in jail.

Powell was also charged with assault on a health care worker, a class A misdemeanor, in a similar incident in May. In that case, Powell is again accused of assaulting a health care worker at Logan Regional Hospital by “striking her right hand with his foot and pinning her hand to the metal guard rail causing damage to the hand,” according to a police affidavit.
