NEWTON, Cache County — West Nile virus has been detected in mosquito populations in Cache County, officials confirmed Monday.

The virus was confirmed in a mosquito population, or pool, that was trapped in Newton, which is northwest of Logan, according to a news release from the Cache Mosquito Abatement District.

The virus was previously found in mosquito pools in Salt Lake and Uintah counties. No human cases of the virus have been reported.

Cache County officials will continue mosquito abatement measures including larvicide, or killing mosquito larvae before they become adult mosquitoes. Fogging for mosquitoes will only occur at night when the mosquitoes carrying the virus are active, the news release says.

People are advised to take precautions to minimize their exposure to mosquitoes and their risk to the virus, the release says.

People should use a repellent with DEET, permethrin, picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus that has been registered with the Environmental Protection Agency. Long sleeves and pants are recommended after dark.

People should also drain standing water in yards or gardens, keep gutters clear of debris, and clean and stock garden ponds with mosquito-eating fish or mosquito dunks. Window and door screens should also be kept in good condition to keep mosquitoes out of homes, and weeds and tall grasses should be kept short because mosquitoes look for tall, shady grass to rest in during the day.
