HERRIMAN — Three men were taken into custody Wednesday evening after police say shots were fired at a neighboring house from their short-term rental property in Rose Canyon.

Detective Ken Hansen with the Unified Police Department said the shootings prompted a standoff with police that lasted several hours until the men finally surrendered.

He said the men may have been drinking. "I think there might be alcohol involved in this one," Hansen said, "hence the poor decision-making."

Unified Police announced the arrest of a Denver man, 29-year-old Alex Brodersen, later Wednesday evening. He is being held at the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of brandishing and felony discharge of a firearm.

Police did not specify if the other two occupants of the home are being held or were involved in the shootings. Hansen said one man surrendered before the other two and believes he did not know the other occupants very well.

Police first received reports of the shootings about 5 p.m., he said. A neighboring home with at least two occupants alerted authorities they were being shot at near 14390 Shaggy Mountain Rd.

Hansen said shots were fired on at least three different occasions; police believe the man or men were using a handgun. Police told the neighbors to shelter in place.

Hansen said there were "quite a few rounds" shot at the neighbor's house, but no one was injured. Hansen does not believe the men knew the occupants of the house that was shot at.

Negotiators and a SWAT team set up containment around the rental house. Hansen said flash-bang grenades were used "to get the attention" of the three men, and a bullhorn was used to communicate with them until they surrendered to authorities.

He said detectives will be collecting more information from the scene, including details about the men taken into custody, witness statements, and an examination of the targeted property for possible damage.
