SALT LAKE CITY — A fourth person has been arrested in connection with the toppling and burning of a Salt Lake police car nearly a week ago in downtown Salt Lake City.
Julie Mariam Yasima, 27, of Murray, was arrested for investigation of criminal mischief and rioting.
On Saturday, a Salt Lake officer was responding to a call unrelated to the protesters when her patrol car became pinned in by protesters in the street at 400 South near 200 East.
“We had to go in with our officers and rescue her out of that car,” Salt Lake Police Chief Mike Brown said, adding that other officers had to literally grab her and pull her from the crowd.
“Once the vehicle was abandoned, members of the crowd intentionally overturned the Salt Lake City police vehicle and intentionally began damage it. The vehicle was eventually set on fire and completely totaled,” according to a police affidavit.
After the incident, investigators released surveillance photos of the incident. Yasima turned herself in on Thursday after she saw herself on the news, the affidavit says.
She is the fourth person arrested in connection with the destruction of the patrol car.
On Sunday, Connor Peebles, 21, turned himself in for his alleged role in flipping the patrol car. He was charged Wednesday with criminal mischief, a first-degree felony, and rioting, a third-degree felony. At least eight people were seen pushing the car over, according to charging documents.
Two men who are accused of setting the patrol car on fire were charged with committing federal crimes this week.
Jackson Stuart Tamowski Patton, 26, and LaTroi Devon Newbins, 28, are each charged in federal court with arson affecting interstate commerce. Both men were recorded on surveillance video throwing combustible substances into the overturned patrol car, court documents state.
