OGDEN — A 22-year-old man was hit by a car and killed while he was clearing debris off the road from another accident Friday.

Family of John Kratzer confirmed in a GoFundMe* that he had died from his injuries on Saturday. Ogden Police later confirmed Sunday he died.

According to Ogden police, a Jeep Liberty ran a red light at the intersection of 12th Street and Monroe Boulevard just after 10:30 p.m. Friday. An Acura traveling east through the intersection hit the Jeep; no one was injured in that crash.

Kratzer was not involved in the accident but stopped to clear the road to prevent other accidents. He was hit by a Hyundai Elantra while clearing the intersection, according to police. He was sent to McKay Dee Hospital in critical condition, where he died from his injuries, according to the GoFundMe.

This incident, however, is not the first time the Kratzer family has lost someone.

In 2018, Wesley Robert Kratzer, John's brother, died while saving a child struggling in the water at Salem Pond. Wesley Kratzer was also 22 years old when he drowned.
