SALT LAKE CITY — One person died late Saturday night after a sedan and pickup collided on I-80 in Parleys Canyon.
According to the Utah Highway Patrol, authorities began receiving calls about a wrong-way driver on I-80 about 11:41 p.m. Troopers responded from Salt Lake and Summit counties; reports of a serious crash emerged minutes later.
Troopers found a silver 2001 Toyota Corolla and a white 2015 Ford F-250 that was pulling an enclosed trailer had collided head-on after the Corolla was driving west in the eastbound lanes.
The driver of the Toyota, its sole occupant, died in the crash. He was later identified as 50-year-old Arturo Hernandez of Park City, UHP said.
"The male driver and female passenger of the Ford were able to exit the vehicle before flames completely engulfed the passenger compartment," the UHP said. They were transported to area hospitals with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
Troopers are not sure why the Corolla was traveling in the wrong direction.
