SALT LAKE CITY — Police on Monday identified an 87-year-old man who died after being hit by a vehicle in a crosswalk on South Temple on Saturday.

George Story was in a crosswalk at about 600 E. South Temple when he was hit by a vehicle, according to Salt Lake City Police Lt. Brian Sloan.

Police initially said Story was in his 60s but later corrected the information.

Story and the driver didn't see each other, Sloan said; the driver cooperated with police.

Witnesses could not recall if the "walk" light was on when the man was crossing, Sloan added.

Sloan reminded both drivers and pedestrians to be cautious when crossing the street or driving past a crosswalk.

"Sometimes you really don't see (pedestrians) until you come up on them and it could be too late, like today," Sloan said.

The area was expected to be closed for about two hours while the scene was cleared.

No citations had been issued as of Saturday. Alcohol was ruled out as a factor, according to Sloan.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the man who was hit was 60. It also mistakenly stated that Salt Lake City Fire Capt. Tony Stowe provided the information for this story, rather than Salt Lake City Police Lt. Brian Sloan.
