COVID-19 disrupts global supply of critical minerals

The Congressional Western Caucus says a new report analyzing the disruption in the global supply chain of critical minerals caused by COVID-19 underscores the urgent need for more domestic mining and processing. “The global pandemic has demonstrated significant supply chain weaknesses across all sectors of our economy, including energy security and innovation. The analysis released (Thursday) underscores the importance of prioritizing domestic critical mineral development to ensure our national and economic security,” said member Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah. “Continued outsourcing of critical minerals’ production leaves American manufacturing, technology, clean energy, medicine, and other sectors crucial to modern life vulnerable to the actions of our adversaries.” — Amy Joi O'Donoghue, KSL

Murray High's lights-on tribute encourages Class of 2020 to 'Be the Light'

Many school lots have been eerily quiet for the past six weeks. With Utah public and charter schools under a soft closure until the end of the year to help combat the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, buildings, parking lots and fields have sat vacant across the Salt Lake Valley. Reopenings bring new cases in S. Korea, virus fears in Italy

South Korea's capital closed down more than 2,100 bars and other nightspots Saturday because of a new cluster of coronavirus infections, Germany scrambled to contain fresh outbreaks at slaughterhouses, and Italian authorities worried that people were getting too friendly at cocktail hour during the country's first weekend of eased restrictions. The new flareups — and fears of a second wave of contagion — underscored the dilemma authorities face as they try to reopen their economies. Around the world, the U.S. and other hard-hit countries are wrestling with how to ease curbs on business and public activity without causing the virus to come surging back. — Associated Press

First grade teacher sends daily comics to her students during at-home-learning

When first-grader Clive Wilcox of Fremont Elementary School opens up his at-home-learning homework from his teacher, Mrs. Quinn, a smile starts to emerge, and then a giggle. He looks on a comic drawn by his teacher’s husband. In the comic, is a boy holding out both his hands up to his computer screen saying "Smell my hands." The caption reads: "Things 1st graders do, I might not miss." But Kay Quinn does miss her students, which is why she said she enlisted the help of her artist husband Jason to connect with her students in a unique and fun way. Kay Quinn said her students know her husband well, and are always asking him to draw something on the board. US approves new coronavirus antigen test with fast results

U.S. regulators have approved a new type of coronavirus test that administration officials have promoted as a key to opening up the country. The Food and Drug Administration on Saturday announced emergency authorization for antigen tests developed by Quidel Corp. of San Diego. The test can rapidly detect fragments of virus proteins in samples collected from swabs swiped inside the nasal cavity, the FDA said in a statement. The antigen test is the third type of test to be authorized by the FDA. — Associated Press

UTA looks to rebuild community confidence

Usha Bala spent a recent morning on State Street, handing out masks to people getting on and off the bus at Utah Transit Authority’s 355 South bus stop. “Any time we do an event and we can give some of our time and be part of the community, I love it,” said Bala, a strategic culture partner for UTA. Bala was one of over a dozen UTA employees that volunteered Thursday “to thank everyone who has relied upon mass transit for essential trips during the COVID-19 pandemic,” the agency said in a news release. Summit County says it's 'fully prepared' to 'criminally enforce' health order

In a document signed by the Summit County sheriff and attorney, as well as the Park City chief of police and prosecutor, the county said Saturday it is "fully prepared" to "criminally enforce the Order for intentional and knowing violations which endanger public health." It also provides resources for individuals to report gatherings of more than 20 people, noncompliant restaurants and businesses, and individuals threatening or attempting to spread COVID-19. Summit County residents can call dispatchers at 435-615-3600 or email pbondurant@summitcounty.org, and molson@summitcounty.org, with the subject line "Health Order Violation," to report problems. Summit County's health order is more restrictive than the state's at large. Specific information about the order is available on this one-sheet summary created by the county. The county asks that individuals do not contact elected officials to report violations and do not report hearsay or minor violations.

Utah health department reports 184 new cases of coronavirus, 5 new deaths Saturday

The Utah Department of Health reported 184 new cases of COVID-19 Saturday and five additional deaths. That brings Utah up to 6,103 positive cases and 66 total deaths from the novel coronavirus, up from 5,919 cases the day before. The state saw a 3.1% increase in cases since Friday; 4.3% of the state's COVID-19 tests have returned positive so far. Ten more Utahns have been hospitalized with the disease over Friday, for a total of 498 since the pandemic began. — Graham Dudley, KSL.com

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases increased by 195 on Friday, with no new reported deaths.

The U.S. unemployment rate hit 14.7% in April, the highest rate since the Great Depression, as 20.5 million jobs vanished in the worst monthly loss on record.

Free COVID-19 testing is being offered on Saturday through appointment from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Utah State Fairpark, 155 N. 1000 West.

Vice President Mike Pence’s press secretary has the coronavirus, the White House said Friday, making her the second person who works at the White House complex known to test positive for the virus this week.
