Police ask for voluntary compliance on Salt Lake County health order, hope 'additional enforcement' not needed

Good afternoon,

We wanted to share with you Sheriff Rivera’s position with regards to the enforcement of Mayor Wilson’s recently issued Public Health Order (PHO), which took effect this morning at 12:01 AM.

Work opportunities extended to Utah retirees in Gov. Herbert’s new executive order

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert issued two new executive orders on Monday in response to the novel coronavirus pandemic. The first order allows entities participating in the Utah Retirement Systems to “extend work opportunities to recently retired persons in order to meet needs for critical government functions.” The second order limits how Industrial Assistance Account funds can be accessed which will allow the Governor’s Office of Economic Development to use the fund for zero interest loans to small businesses “Utah’s coronavirus response is comprehensive. It takes into account both crucial public health needs and economic needs,” Herbert said in a statement. “These executive orders will help us continue providing essential services, and create a pathway to support small businesses impacted by social distancing orders and recommendations.”

University of Utah, Weber State University summer courses shift to online-only

With Utah colleges and universities already using distance learning for the remainder of the spring term, the University of Utah and Weber State University are planning summer term, when both will continue to offer classes digitally only. Read the full story here.

Child care services offered to essential Utah employees

Utah leaders on Monday announced the creation of One Utah Childcare, a service that will provide free child care to essential employees, such as health care and government workers. The services will be available on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at various locations across the state, according to Tracy Gruber, director of the Utah Office of Child Care. The child care centers will be staffed with people who have a previous background in child care and have been through a background check process, she said.

Wasatch County issues 'stay home, stay safe' order

Monday, Wasatch County became the third county in the state to issue its own "Stay Safe, Stay Home" order. The order goes into effect no later than 7 a.m. Wednesday and mandates that all businesses shall close, except for those deemed essential, until at least April 14, according to the Wasatch County Health Department. Businesses that remain open must engage in social distancing practices.

Pac-12 extends athletic activity suspension through May 31

The suspension of all sports in the Pac-12 is being extended following a decision by the conference Monday. In a meeting with its CEOs, the Pac-12 decided to extend its suspension of all sports-related activities through May 31, according to a news release from the conference.

School shutdowns raise stakes of digital divide for students

Students struggling to get online in a rural South Carolina county received a boost last week with the arrival of six buses equipped with Wi-Fi, some of the hundreds the state has rolled out since schools were closed by the coronavirus outbreak. With routers mounted inside, the buses broadcast enough bandwidth in an area the size of a small parking lot for parents to drive up and children to access the internet from inside their cars. One of the buses set up outside the apartment complex of Lacheyle Moore, who had been limiting her own usage to leave enough data on her cellphone plan for her daughter’s schoolwork. “I have to put extra data on my phone to make sure her work gets done, so she can get graded for it,” said Moore, who works as a cashier and shifted her schedule to help instruct her two children.

2 new COVID-19 deaths reported; Utah up to 806 cases

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases has increased to 787 in Utah residents and 19 in visitors, the Utah Department of Health confirmed Monday. Two more deaths were also reported, bringing the total number of deaths in the state to four. Read the full story here.

Macy’s to furlough majority of its 130,000 workers

Macy’s says it will stop paying tens of thousands of employees who were thrown out of work when the chain closed its stores in response to collapsing sales during the pandemic, the Associated Press reported on Monday. The majority of its 130,000 employees, including stock people and sales clerks, will still collect health benefits, but the company said that it is transitioning to an “absolute minimum workforce” needed to maintain basic operations. Macy’s has lost the bulk of its sales due to the temporarily closing of all 500 of its stores starting March 18.

Second Latter-day Saint missionary tests positive for COVID-19, church confirms

A second missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has tested positive for COVID-19, a church spokesman confirmed Monday. The sister missionary who tested positive was serving in Australia and is now in self-isolation at home, according to church spokesman Daniel Woodruff. The church did not say where the sister missionary is from. "As the COVID-19 pandemic progresses throughout the world, we recognize that additional missionaries will unfortunately contract the virus," Woodruff said in an email. "We are concerned about any missionary who contracts the virus and will work to help them receive appropriate care. Gratefully, young missionaries are not generally considered to be at high risk of complications from the illness." Woodruff added the church is expecting more missionaries to contract the virus and will help any missionaries receive the health care they need. On Friday, the church announced that a missionary from Guatemala, who was serving in Mexico, tested positive for the disease.

Instacart workers seek strike as jobs get busier, riskier

A possible strike by Instacart workers highlights the impact of the coronavirus outbreak on the grocery delivery business, where workers are worried about their safety as they try to meet a surge in demand for online groceries. A group called the Gig Workers Collective is calling for a nationwide walk-out Monday. They've been asking Instacart to provide workers with hazard pay and protective gear, among other demands. Instacart said Sunday it would soon provide workers with a new hand sanitizer upon request and outlined changes to its tip system. The group said the measures were too little too late.

Wall Street pushes higher, led by health care stocks

U.S. stocks are pushing a bit higher in Monday morning trading, but markets were tentative around the world amid uncertainty about whether global authorities can do enough to nurse the economy through the coronavirus outbreak. The S&P 500 was up nearly 2% in morning trading, renewing gains after falling close to the flatline. European markets were mixed after paring earlier losses. Asian markets were down, but by more modest degrees than the huge swings that have rocked investors over the last month.

Spain passes China in infections; Trump extends US lockdown

In an abrupt turnaround, President Donald Trump extended lockdown measures across the United States as deaths in New York from the new coronavirus passed 1,000. Spain on Monday became the third country to surpass China in infections after the United States and Italy. With a population of only 47 million to China’s 1.4 billion, Spain’s tally of infections reached 85,195, an 8% rise from the previous day. Spain also reported 812 new deaths, raising its overall virus death toll to 7,300.

City at center of China's virus outbreak gradually revives

Shopkeepers in the city at the center of China's virus outbreak were reopening Monday but customers were scarce after authorities lifted more of the anti-virus controls that kept tens of millions of people at home for two months. “I’m so excited, I want to cry,” said a woman on one of Wuhan's major shopping streets, the Chuhe Hanjie pedestrian mall, who would give only the English name Kat.

Stocks extend losses, oil trades below $20 on virus impact

World markets started the week with more losses as countries reported surging numbers of infections from the coronavirus, forcing prolonged shutdowns of travel and business in many regions. Shares fell in London, Paris and Tokyo on Monday but surged 7% in Australia after the government promised more recession-fighting stimulus. The U.S. contract for oil fell below $20 a barrel for the first time since 2002. U.S. futures fluctuated overnight, with the future for the S&P 500 up 0.1% shortly before the start of trading on Wall Street, while that for the Dow industrials dropped 0.1%.

Trump extends virus guidelines, braces US for big death toll

Bracing the nation for a coronavirus death toll that could exceed 100,000 people, President Donald Trump extended restrictive social distancing guidelines through April, bowing to public health experts who presented him with even more dire projections for the expanding coronavirus pandemic. It was a stark shift in tone by the Republican president, who only days ago mused about the country reopening in a few weeks. From the Rose Garden, he said his Easter revival hopes had only been “aspirational.”

Tokyo Olympics rescheduled for July 23-Aug. 8 in 2021

The Tokyo Olympics will open next year in the same time slot scheduled for this year's games. Tokyo organizers said Monday the opening ceremony will take place on July 23, 2021 — almost exactly one year after the games were due to start this year. “The schedule for the games is key to preparing for the games," Tokyo organizing committee president Yoshiro Mori said. “This will only accelerate our progress.”
