MOAB — A Grand County Sheriff’s deputy saved the day when he ran into a house fire and saved both a man and a dog earlier this week.

Around 8 p.m. on Jan. 26, Grand County Sheriff’s Office deputy Jamison Wiggins arrived at a house fire on Desert Road with a person reportedly trapped inside, the agency said in a Facebook post Friday.

Wiggins discovered active flames coming from the house and noticed a woman trying to unlock the front door to try and save her elderly father, who had limited mobility, the agency said. Wiggins entered the home, where he was met with black smoke, and heard a man’s cry from help. The deputy was able to locate the man, who was using a walker and struggling to escape.

“Wiggins rushed in and safely transported the man outside to safety,” the sheriff’s office said.

Soon after, the man told Wiggins his dog was still inside the burning home. Wiggins went back into the house, located the dog and brought it out to safety.

Moab County police and Moab Valley Fire were at the scene by this time, the sheriff’s office said. Grand County emergency crews treated the woman for smoke inhalation. The man was taken to Moab Regional Hospital and has since been released and is recovering, the sheriff’s office said.

Moab Valley Fire is investigating the cause of the fire.
