CEDAR CITY — Human remains were discovered in a drainage tunnel running beneath I-15 in Cedar City, authorities say.

Cedar City police officers responded to a call about the discovery of remains at approximately 2 p.m. on Saturday, according to an emailed statement from Cedar City Police Lt. Jimmy Roden.

Two youth who were walking through the area came across the remains and informed their parents, who notified police, Roden said.

Investigators from the Cedar City Police Department and representatives from the Iron County Sheriff's Office and the Office of the Medical Examiner retrieved the remains on Sunday, Roden explained.

He added that the "skeletal" remains were found in an "advanced stage of decomposition," and investigators are unable to currently determine anything about the remains, including the deceased's sex.

The medical examiner's office will conduct an autopsy on the body, and additional information will be available once the autopsy has been completed, Roden stated.

Officials did not immediately release the exact location of the tunnel.
