SALT LAKE CITY — A second man has been arrested in connection with a 2017 killing of an 18-year-old man in Magna.
Kilungo Pierre Ilunga, 22, was arrested Thursday for investigation of murder, according to a jail report.
Investigators believe Ilunga was with Isaac Patton on Feb. 16, 2017 during an alleged failed drug robbery that resulted in the shooting death of 18-year-old Tristen Mogadam.
Patton was charged with murder, aggravated robbery and other offenses in 3rd District Court in Salt Lake City in March 2017.
Mogadam was killed near 3231 S. Julia Lane in Magna. Investigators believe Patton had arranged to buy marijuana from Mogadam, according to charges. He then pulled out a gun and asked Mogadam “what else you got,” charges state.
Mogadam pushed Patton and then started running toward the house. Another man who was with Patton said “blast him,” charges state. Mogadam’s brother, who was nearby, later told investigators he heard three gunshots, according to charges.
An autopsy determined that Mogadam was shot in the back once, and the bullet went through his heart and exited through his chest, according to charges, Four shell casings were found in the road near the home, and a bullet hole was found in the front door, police said.
During the shooting investigation, an informant told a Unified police detective that one of the people who was with Patton at the time was known as Brazy, according to the jail report. The informant showed the detective a Facebook page belonging to Brazy.
The detective was able to determine Brazy was Ilunga, and a second informant identified Brazy as Ilunga.
The second informant told the detective they were with Ilunga a few days after Mogadam’s death, and Ilunga bragged to the informant that he had “robbed a group in Magna,” according to the jail report.
The informant also said Ilunga had bragged about telling Patton to shoot the person, and said one of the people was shot while running back into the house, the report states.
Ilunga was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Thursday. He has not yet been formally charged in the case.
Patton pleaded not guilty last year to murder and other charges in the case, according to court records. A jury trial for Patton is set for January in 3rd District Court.
Charges were filed against Patton with gang enhancements. After Mogadam’s death, Patton told police he believed Mogadam was in a rival gang, according to charges.
Ilunga also appears to be part of a gang, according to the jail report.
