PROVO — Football fans heading to Thursday night's matchup between Utah and BYU in Provo can expect delays of up to an hour on southbound I-15, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.

Citing various construction projects, UDOT spokesman John Gleason encouraged fans to plan ahead, leave early and consider using public transportation to ease the gridlock on the way to LaVell Edwards Stadium.

“Several construction projects are currently underway on I-15, and drivers will notice shifted and narrow lanes in several locations,” Gleason said in a news release. “Using UTA’s FrontRunner and Utah Valley Express are a good way to avoid traffic when traveling to and from the stadium.

"Utah Valley Express service continues after midnight, and UTA has added two FrontRunner trains that will depart Provo one hour after the game ends.”

UDOT mentioned construction projects from Riverdale to Layton; from Salt Lake City to Draper; in Lehi; on 500 West in Provo; and Bulldog Boulevard in Provo. The release says drivers “should use Orem Center Street, University Parkway and University Avenue exits.”

UDOT encourages drivers to check game day traffic updates at udottraffic.utah.gov/ and to follow UDOT on Twitter. Thursday’s season-opening rivalry game between Utah and BYU kicks off at 8:15 p.m.
