SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake police responded to an officer-involved shooting Monday about 7 p.m. near the Park Place at City Centre apartments that left one person dead.
Salt Lake police Sgt. Keith Horrocks said police were in the early stages of investigating and were interviewing witnesses about the incident.
Two officers initially responded to a 911 hang-up call in the area, Horrocks said, but the details about what happened next he still didn't know. The incident left one individual dead.
Life-saving measures were performed on the individual, whose name was not released, but the person died on scene, Horrocks said. Police referred to the person as a "suspect" but didn't provide details on what the deceased person was suspected of.
He said police think the two responding officers' body-cameras were probably turned on, but that and other details about the officer-involved critical incident would be determined during an investigation by the West Valley Police Department.
Body-cam footage, if it exists, will be released within 10 days, according to Salt Lake City policy, Horrocks said.
Police didn’t know if anyone had been taken into custody relating to the incident.
Salt Lake police asked the public to avoid 300 East between 600 South and 800 South, where the road was closed while police work an ongoing investigation. The intersection at 300 East and 700 South was expected to remain closed for several hours, according to Horrocks.
Tyler Diesenberg, a nearby resident, said he watched the scene unfold from across the street.
He said he heard police say "shots fired" and then saw "a bunch of cops running in, and within seconds, you know, probably another 10 cop cars converged from all directions and just shot up the driveway.”
Diesenberg, who first thought the sound was fireworks, estimated about 11 or 12 shots were fired and said “it all happened within a second.”
