DRAPER — A fire broke out Tuesday afternoon near the Point of the Mountain, threatening several homes in the area. Officials later confirmed the fire was human-caused.
Three homes were evacuated in the area, according to Draper Fire Chief Clint Smith. By 2:45 p.m., no mandatory evacuations were still in effect, he said.
Several other homes remained evacuation standby in case conditions change, Smith said. There are no injuries and no homes burned, he added.
The fire, which started a few feet away from the homes, was initially reported about 1:45 p.m. near 9 E. Manilla Circle in Draper, Smith said. The fire was in an area adjacent to the Point of the Mountain Flight Park, he added.
Video footage from KSL's Chopper 5 showed flames flare back up in the area several times. The area is known to be windy with rapidly changing conditions.
The fire worked its way through an area of grass and was threatening homes, Smith said.
By 2:45 p.m., crews were beginning to get a handle on the fire, Smith said. He was not sure how much area had burned.
Details about how what exactly caused the fire weren't immediately available but Smith did say humans were at fault for the flames. By 6 p.m., firefighters had put out several hotspots and appeared to have control over the fire.
As of 7:30 p.m. officials hadn't confirmed if the fire was 100% contained.
Multiple agencies were on the scene of the fire, Smith added. He said the thick vegetation in the area made it difficult for firefighters to initially gain control.
While this year's wet spring delayed fire season, Smith advised the public to not be deceived and noted this fire served as a good reminder the high temperatures, low humidity and winds bring threats of fires.
