SALT LAKE CITY — A jack-knifed semitruck with an approximate 200-gallon fuel spill has closed lanes on southbound I-15 near 900 South, police say.

The semitruck is on southbound I-15 at milepost 307 in Salt Lake City, near the 900 South exit. Utah Highway Patrol officials said three left lanes are closed, causing traffic to backup in the area.

Hazmat teams are cleaning up the fuel, but officials expect the cleanup to take at least a few hours. Backup traffic stretches about a mile and a half behind the crash scene, according to Utah Department of Transportation spokesman John Gleason.

UHP requests drivers use I-80 and I-215 and avoid the area if possible as major delays are expected. As of 10:30 p.m., UDOT officials estimated the roadway would not be clear until after 12 a.m.

Medical teams treated one person at the scene, but have not released details on the condition of the individual, UHP said.
