HURRICANE — A man was hospitalized after being shot by another man during what police believe was a domestic dispute.

Officers responded to call about a man being "shot in the stomach" at a residence in the area of 3700 W. 165 North in Hurricane, said officer Ken Thompson.

"It appears the subject who was shot arrived at the residence and there was a custody/domestic dispute between the subject who was shot and several other individuals," Thompson wrote in a press release.

Witnesses told police that the man who was shot "lunged at another male with an object in his hand" that the shooter believed was a weapon, the release said. That man "pulled a handgun and fired one shot, striking the male in the stomach."

The victim was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center and was undergoing surgery Saturday night. Officers were continuing to collect information and evidence, and they said they'd release information "as appropriate," according to the release.

Thompson said the investigation was only a few hours old, so officers were still trying to determine the exact relationship of the man who was shot to the person who fired the weapon. One of the men was not from Hurricane, but Thompson wasn't sure which man that was.

Police have the weapon and there is no danger to the public, Thompson said, but no one was arrested as of press time Saturday night.
