Officials: One man hospitalized after shooting himself during a police altercation

ROOSEVELT — A man has been hospitalized after shooting himself during a police altercation at a home early Sunday morning, according to officials.

About 2 a.m., two Duchesne County Sheriff's deputies and two police officers from Roosevelt responded to a report of domestic violence and someone armed with a gun at a home just south of Roosevelt, near 500 East and 5000 South, officials from Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Responding officers encountered a man outside the home, sheriff's office officials said. They tried to apprehend him, but he pulled a handgun and armed it with a bullet, they added. The man began to raise the gun, and a deputy, who said he was worried about his and other officers' safety, fired two rounds at the man that both missed, according to officials.

The man then raised the gun to his own head and shot himself, Duchesne County Sheriff’s officials said. He was transported to Uintah Basin Medical Center in Roosevelt and then flown to a Wasatch Front hospital for further treatment. The man is expected to survive, and no law enforcement officers were injured.

Officials did not release additional information about the man, including his name and age.

The deputy who fired shots has been placed on administrative leave, per sheriff's office protocol, and separate investigations into the incident are being conducted by the sheriff’s office and the Basin Critical Incident Team.
