SALT LAKE CITY — A 15-year-old charged in the shooting death of his stepbrother will remain in detention for at least two more weeks.

A judge declined to release the teen Tuesday and instead ordered an evaluation ahead of a hearing later this month, saying she wants to be sure he receives counseling and proper supervision if he is released ahead of trial.

His mother, who lives in Tooele County, told 3rd District Juvenile Judge Susan Eisenman that "I would be more than happy to take him home. We have a lot of family support."

Eisenman entered denials, the equivalent of not guilty pleas, on the boy's behalf. He is charged with manslaughter, a second-degree felony, and obstructing justice, a third-degree felony.

The boy sat next to his attorney in a red shirt and did not speak except to state his name.

A funeral for 16-year-old Jerrad Jacobsen was also scheduled for Tuesday in Kearns. In an obituary, his family members recalled him as a loving brother with "a heart of gold," and a contagious smile.

Police were called to 5007 W. 5400 South on March 18 to find Jerrad dead in a bedroom with what investigators initially believed was a self-inflicted shotgun blast. The 15-year-old said the two were hanging out in Jerrad's bedroom and he had thought the gun was unloaded when he fired, prosecutors say.

The teen, who KSL is not naming at this time, is due back in court April 16.
