OGDEN — A driver died in Ogden after dragging an officer with his car and then leading police on a chase that ended in a crash Friday, police said.

About 7 p.m., an officer made a traffic stop and the driver of the vehicle "attempted to flee while the officer was speaking with him," Ogden police said in a statement. The officer was then dragged by the vehicle.

The officer sustained minor injuries, according to the statement.

"The driver fled at a high rate of speed" before losing control and hitting a traffic pole, police said. He died on scene.

Additional details about the man, including his name and age, were not immediately released.

Ogden Police Lt. Tyler Hanson said the pursuit was short and occurred near 23rd Street and Wall Avenue. The crash did not involve any vehicle other than the suspect's.

Police closed Wall Avenue between 22nd Street and 24th Street while they investigated and asked drivers to avoid the area.

The Utah Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
