NEAR PANGUITCH — A propane heater caused a gas explosion inside of a cabin in Duck Creek Saturday night, injuring four people in the blast, according to Cedar Mountain Fire Chief Casey Tuttle.
A family of three was sleeping in a cabin in Duck Creek Village near Panguitch when a regulator malfunction caused a propane heater inside the cabin to ignite flames and initiate a gas explosion, Tuttle reported. The family of three, along with the site manager, were all injured in the blast and flown to Dixie Regional Medical Center.
The site manager, the father, and his 1-year-old child were all released from the hospital Saturday night, according to Tuttle. The mother was released Sunday morning.
Fire crews from Cedar Mountain, Garfield County, Panguitch Lake, Panguitch City, Kane County, Kanab, and Orderville were dispatched around 10:50 p.m. Saturday and fought the fire until around 5 a.m. Sunday, according to Tuttle. The firefighters had to battle harsh weather conditions as well, as temperatures got down to -13 degrees and they had to wade through several feet of snow at some points.
The blast damaged four cabins, and debris was launched about 70-100 yards away from the site, according to Tuttle.
