HUNTSVILLE — A Layton man was critically injured Saturday afternoon when a boulder fell off the side of a mountain and crashed through the windshield of the truck he was driving, officials said.
About 1:15 p.m., the man was driving west on state Route 158, just east of the Pineview Reservoir dam, when a boulder crashed through the truck’s windshield and came to a rest in the back seat, according to Weber County Sheriff’s Sgt. Stephanie Tatton.
The incident caused the man, who was injured by the rock, to crash his vehicle into the side of the mountain, Tatton added.
The man, 57, was transported to a hospital in critical condition while a 55-year-old female passenger was not injured in the crash, Tatton said.
Tatton called the accident “very uncommon.”
“Every now and then we’ll have larger rocks come down but we’ve never, to my knowledge, had someone injured like this,” she said.
Due to “smaller rocks” that continued to fall off the side of the mountain, officials closed the road for approximately one hour and 15 minutes as Utah Department of Transportation personnel used a snowplow to clear the rocks.
