SALT LAKE CITY — A woman died and a man was critically injured Wednesday night in a stabbing, police said.
The stabbing occurred near 500 N. 300 West behind a dumpster shortly after 9:30 p.m. Police fanned out through surrounding neighborhoods and a helicopter hovered overhead following the incident.
When crews responded to the scene, they found the man and woman in "very rough shape," said Salt Lake Police Lt. Dave Cracroft.
Firefighters declared the woman dead at the scene, but she and the man were both taken to a hospital.
He said police were searching for a balding Hispanic man in connection with the stabbing. The man was last seen running south from the area of the stabbing and was wrapped in a blanket.
Cracroft said the victims and suspect were homeless. Police believe the stabbing occurred after an argument over a piece of property, the lieutenant said.
Additional information about the stabbing or those involved was not immediately available.
