LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON — A man is in critical condition after falling 200 feet near the Lisa Falls area of Little Cottonwood Canyon on Friday afternoon, police said.
The 21-year-old man fell about 3:20 p.m., according to Unified police detective Ken Hansen. He was with another person, according to Hansen. It was not clear exactly how the man fell.
As of Saturday morning, the man was still in critical condition, according to Hansen. He is from California but moved to Salt Lake City several months ago, Hansen said.
The person who was with the man told police that the man was unconscious after the fall, Hansen said. UPD Canyons officers and a search and rescue crew responded to the scene to help get the man out of a rocky area, Hansen said.
Three rescue crews were sent to the scene where the man fell, Hansen said. A state Department of Public Safety helicopter was equipped to hoist the man out of the rocky area where he landed and take him to the road, Hansen said. From there, he would be moved to a medical helicopter and transported to a hospital, he said.
At 6:40 p.m., crews were preparing to airlift the man to a trauma hospital via a medical helicopter, Unified police officials said on Twitter.
Hansen said the Lisa Falls area is more difficult hiking terrain, so falls and accidents sometimes happen there.
"When you fall, you tend to fall a long distance (at Lisa Falls)," Hansen said. "That’s the issue with Lisa Falls."
