OGDEN, Utah (AP) — A group of high school students in Utah are coming together to stand in protest of gun violence in schools.
The Standard-Examiner reports students at Ben Lomond High School will stand quietly at their desks for three minutes to call attention to the continuing gun violence in schools. The protest begins at 2:14 p.m. Monday, and every Monday thereafter.
The students are calling their movement #Standfor214. The significance of standing at 2:14 p.m. is to act as a reminder that the latest school shooting happened at a high school in Parkland, Florida, on Feb. 14 —or 2/14.
The students also will stand for three minutes, ending at 2:17 p.m., in honor of the 17 lives lost in the shooting.
The idea for the silent protest developed in teacher Doug Stephens' Advanced Placement classes.
