NEPHI — A driver was killed after a high-speed pursuit resulted in a rollover crash, closing northbound and southbound lanes of I-15 just south of Nephi for several hours Saturday night, Utah Highway Patrol said.

At about 5 p.m., a UHP trooper attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation on northbound I-15 near milepost 207 near Yuba Lake State Park. UHP said the driver did not yield and fled at a high rate of speed, beginning a pursuit.

Approximately 10 miles later, the driver lost control and went off the road toward the left side of the road. The vehicle rolled and came to rest in the southbound lanes.

UHP said the driver did not survive the crash and was pronounced dead on the scene. The identity of the individual was not released, pending family notification.

Officials said a female passenger was transported to a local hospital in poor condition.

I-15 was closed in both northbound and southbound directions for several hours. Southbound traffic was diverted off at milepost 222, routing to SR-28, then SR-78 and back onto I-15 at milepost 208. Northbound traffic followed the same route in reverse, UHP said.

UHP said it is unknown why the driver fled. Utah County Sheriff’s Office is handling the crash investigation and the State Bureau of Investigation is leading the criminal investigation.
