Fire that destroyed Parade of Homes house was arson, officials say

SOUTH JORDAN — Investigators have determined fires that burned two homes earlier this week, including one that was to be included in the Salt Lake Parade of Homes, was the result of arson.

South Jordan spokeswoman Tina Brown had few other details Friday about how that conclusion was reached, how the fire was started or whether it might be linked to any other recent suspicious fires in Davis County.

She only said based on the investigation, the cause of the fires has been declared as arson.

Late Monday, a fire was reported at a home under construction near 9744 S. Lazy Water Cove (1000 West). The house, which was still in the framing stage, was quickly engulfed in flames.

The heat from that fire spread to a neighboring house, which was nearly completed. That home was valued at more than $1 million and was to be included in the Parade of Homes.

Neither house was occupied, and no injuries were reported.

Sunday night in Centerville, a dumpster was set on fire at one location and a construction trailer holding roofing materials at another, in addition to two garbage cans in front of homes.

Investigators had released surveillance video of a possible suspect earlier this week in connection with those incidents. Detectives announced Thursday, however, that they found the man in the video and determined he is not a suspect.

Those fires came on the heels of a series of small fires in Farmington Canyon on July 6.
