SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah Democrats have asked a judge to order the state Republican party to comply with election laws or be stripped of its party status.
Utah Republicans filed a lawsuit earlier this month to allow them to disqualify candidates from the primary ballot who have bypassed the traditional caucus and convention system by gathering voter signatures, which is guaranteed by the 2014 law.
Attorneys for the Democrats on Tuesday filed a motion to intervene on the lawsuit, saying the law is clear.
Utah's GOP has already sued over the law once before. A federal judge upheld the signature-gathering part of the law.
Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox says he does not plan to pull the Republican Party's status as a qualified party, but that a judge's ruling could change the situation.
