MIDVALE — A man was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly tried to hit a police vehicle with a stolen suburban, officials said.
Around 10:30 a.m., a Unified police officer located the vehicle — which had been stolen out of Herriman early Sunday morning — and tried to stop the driver, according to Unified police detective Chuck Malm.
The man was driving erratically, so officers didn't initially pursue him. A short time later, a detective in an unmarked car followed the suburban for a while. Additional officers tried to spike the tires of the vehicle around 700 West and 6500 South, Malm said.
Another officer then came into the area from the opposite direction with the police car lights on. The alleged car thief tried to hit that officer, but the officer evaded him, and no one was injured.
The stolen suburban tires were spiked shortly after, and police pursued the vehicle. The driver lost control around 1000 West and 7800 South, jumped out of his car and tried to run.
He gave up after running about 50 yards and several officers safely apprehended the man, Malm said.
The male driver was identified as 27-year-old Torey Massey. Malm said Massey was on parole and has a violent history. He was booked into jail and could face several felony charges, according to police. He also had a large amount of methamphetamine.
According to court documents, Massey has previously been convicted of robbery, failure to stop/respond at command of police, aggravated assault, forgery and attempted theft by receiving stolen property.
Malm said the suburban was stolen from an open garage when its doors were unlocked and the keys were sitting on the center console. He said it's a good reminder for residents to make sure their property is secured at all times.
