SANDY — Police opened a homicide investigation into a man's death after his body was found Monday inside a basement apartment with an apparent gunshot wound.

Sandy police were called to 1365 E. 8085 South around 3:15 p.m. after a landlord visiting the apartment to collect rent reportedly found the man deceased.

Investigators didn't know Monday whether the man was the tenant living in the apartment or someone else, said Sandy Police Sgt. Dean Carriger. Police had not positively identified him as of about 7:30 p.m., but he appeared to be in his early 20s, Carriger said.

Sandy police obtained a search warrant Monday evening to re-enter the apartment, at which point they determined there was enough information to examine his death as a homicide, according to Carriger.

Additional information about what led to the death being investigated as a homicide was not immediately available. An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday to determine the exact cause of the man's death.

Anyone with information about this case can call Sandy police at 801-568-7200.
