OGDEN, Utah (AP) -- Researchers are looking for police officers and firefighters who were exposed to chemicals while busting meth labs. They're studying a possible link to illnesses, including cancer.
The Utah Legislature approved $500,000 for the study after a growing number of claims filed with the state Workers Compensation Fund. More than 50 pending claims are from former narcotics officers who broke down meth labs. Some of the officers are ailing and some have died.
The study is nearly finished, but researchers are asking for more officers to come forward by Aug. 1.
Any full-time police officers and firefighters who served in Utah for at least one year between 1980 and 2004 are eligible.
