TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Republican Gov. Sam Brownback named three new members Tuesday to the Kansas Board of Regents, and one is a CEO involved in the Kansas Chamber of Commerce and an anti-tax group.
Brownback on Tuesday announced his appointments of David Murfin of Wichita, Dennis Mullin of Manhattan and Daniel Thomas of Mission Hills to the nine-member board that oversees higher education. They were appointed to four-year terms that start in July.
Murfin is the president and CEO of Murfin Inc., which has interests that include oil drilling and the sale of construction equipment. He also is a member of the Kansas Chamber's board of directors and has served as president of the Kansas Club for Growth.
Brownback's office also noted that Murfin is a former president of the Kansas Independent Oil and Gas Association and serves on an advisory board for the University of Kansas' business school.
Mullin is chairman and CEO of Steel and Pipe Supply Co. He serves on an advisory for Kansas State University's business school and is treasurer of the Flint Hills Christian School in Manhattan.
Thomas is a dentist. He serves on the board of the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., and on the board of the Kansas Arts Foundation.
They will replace Fred Logan, a Prairie Village attorney and former Kansas Republican Party chairman; former state Rep. Kenny Wilk, of Lansing; and Robba Moran, of Manhattan, an attorney who is the wife of U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran.
The new appointments must be confirmed by the Senate. Approval by a Senate committee this summer would permit them to take their seats until the Legislature reconvenes in January.
