MIDVALE — A 17-year-old student was critically injured when an SUV hit him near Hillcrest High School Friday morning.
The boy was part of a group crossing 900 East at about 7500 South when a Mitsubishi Montero heading northbound hit him around 7:45 a.m said Lt. Justin Hoyal of the Unified Police Department. The boy entered the crosswalk using a skateboard, he said.
A medical helicopter was called to the scene but the student was taken by ambulance to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition, Hoyal said.
The 35-year-old driver of the vehicle that hit the student was cooperating with police. Investigators were trying to determine who had the right of way prior to the crash.
Jeff Haney, spokesman for the Canyons School District, said extra counselors would be available to Hillcrest students throughout the day, and the school would work with those who might be tardy due to the accident and resulting traffic backup.
Updates will be posted as they become available.
