MILLCREEK — The firearm used to kill a 33-year-old man early Sunday morning has been found, officials said.
The weapon was found in a vehicle at the scene of the homicide at 3350 South. The vehicle is not Ali's, but detectives believe he tried to get rid of the weapon by leaving it in a random car, according to the Unified Police Department.
Ahmed Ali, 29, shot Modibo Diallo, 33, at a party shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday morning in the basement of a residence at 1509 E. 3350 S., according to Lt. Justin Hoyal with the Unified Police Department.
Ali and Diallo, reported acquaintances, went inside the basement after Ali arrived at the party and had a verbal argument. Witnesses then heard gun shots, Hoyal said.
The witnesses went downstairs and confronted Ali, but he fled before police officers arrived. Diallo was transported to an area hospital where he later died, Hoyal said.
Unified Police officers received a call at around 2:18 p.m. at 1705 E. Millcreek Circle with a complaint that a male matching the shooter's description was on their front porch, knocking on their door, Hoyal said.
Ali then went to the garage of the residence, and when police arrived, they were able to get the residents out safely, Hoyal said.
Police officers took Ali into custody at around 5:30 a.m. Ali surrended without further incident. He was then booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of murder, Hoyal said.
